Discipline is the key

Discipline is the key to success. I strongly believe that being disciplined and having very strong work ethics will lead us to great things in life. Some may think that when you talk about discipline, you talk about strict rules and depriving yourself of freedom, after all, we love to work for ourselves and the freedom it gives us. But, if you are disciplined and you stick to your rules, you will have the freedom to enjoy your life the way you want it. It’s all about balance.

Setting your own rules

Sometimes, I see people have a huge misconception about being self-employed. It’s been happening to me for more than 10 years. Some say I don’t have start and finish hours, that I can work when I want to and take as many days as I want because I have no boss. Well, it may be true for some, I cannot speak for all people who work for themselves. It is certainly not my case. If you are a serious entrepreneur, you take yourself very seriously. You can set your own working hours and things like that, but those have to be set in a way that will suit your clients as well, otherwise, you won’t have clients.

It is very important to set our rules and stick to those rules. If you set yourself to work 9 to 5, work from 9 to 5. Consistency is important. Your clients will see that and will rely on you more easily. People don’t like to chase you around. So, if you are not there, you’ll miss out.

Time management

This comes to time management skills. The more organised you are, the more successful you’ll become, in my opinion. It allows you to assess your time and what you want to do with it. It may look strict and inflexible, but in reality, that’s what gives you the flexibility and freedom to do what you want, when you want it.

Establishing a balance

If you manage your time effectively, you will be able to establish a balance between your work and private life. This is something I see often with freelancers. They don’t set boundaries, they work long hours and they end up burnt out. It is not good for their businesses and their health. Yes, we all need to work and feed our families, but we also need time to relax and be with our families.

Plus, if you are organised and serious about your business, you will pass it on to your clients and they will recognise that as a positive thing. You are reliable, you are professional and you are ready to work with them.
